IFM Chief urges African countries to embrace green transition in face of climate change

Kristalina Georgieva, the Director of International Monetary Fund (IMF) called on Africa on Thursday to turn to green energy and to accelerate their transition to clean energy sources and sustainable agriculture given what she called the “existential threat” posed by climate change.

“This is the most significant risk we face as a global community. It is an existential risk,” she added.

She was speaking during an inaugural speech, in Abidjan, the economic hub of Côte d’Ivoire, in the presence of President Alassane Ouattara.

IFM Chief visited the African country in the buildup to the World Bank and IFM General Assemblies to be held in Morocco next week.

She argued that it was paramount for Africa and its growing population to ensure sustainable agriculture with more drought resilient seeds, and increased transportation and storage possibilities so food was not wasted.
