Senegal: Caisse des Dépôts et Consignations CEO fired in wake of announcement to run for 2024 elections

Senegal’s President Macky Sall fired Tuesday September 12 the head of la Caisse des Dépôts et Consignations, few hours after the latter unveiled plans to run for February 2024 presidential elections.

A decree signed by the Senegalese leader, seen by State-run news agency APS, announced the removal of El Hadji Mamadou Diao, better known as Mame Boye Diao, a key figure of ruling “Alliance pour la République (APR)”.

The move came few hours after Diao reportedly announced his plans to run for next year presidential election under the banner of “Coalition d’un Sénégal nouveau,” a political movement he has launched.

Sall appointed Diao for the position early February 2023 this year. The mayor of the southern city of Kolda is the second key figure of the ruling party to distance himself from President Sall in less than a week.

Saturday September 9, Aly Ngouille Ndiaye, Agriculture Minister tendered in his resignation from the government and pulled out from ruling party few days after Sall designated incumbent Prime Minister Amadou Ba as candidate for 2024 presidential elections for the APR and the ruling coalition Benno Bokk Yaakaar.

N. Ndiaye reportedly did not like the choice of Ba as he was seeing himself a serious contender and potential candidate for the party.
