Niger bans export of cereals including rice, millet to curb shortage
Niger’s ministry of Trade imposed Tuesday July 25 until further notice a ban on the export of the several cereals including rice and millet, in a move to address food shortage.
The ban targets the export of millet, paddy and milled rice, all part of the traditional diet in the African country.
The ministry vested the customs, the military and law reinforcement forces with power to ensure the implementation of the ban and tackle any breach.
The country is facing an inflation of prices of the cereals owing to shortage caused by exports. In addition, the winter campaign is marked this year by a late start to the rains, dry spells and a deterioration in security in certain regions of the country.
