Building collapses in Egyptian capital killing 13 people
13 people died Monday after a building collapsed in the Egyptian capital Cairo, in a string building disasters.
A five-storey building reportedly built without permit before 1980, when the country’s construction law was passed, collapsed after a resident recently demolished his apartment’s walls on the first floor, despite warnings not to do so.
The prosecution, “Ahram Online” reports, detained both the resident and the contractor responsible for the walls’ destruction.
It also commissioned the police to conduct a full investigation and commissioned the Administrative Prosecution to take all necessary measures to preserve the lives and property of citizens adjacent to the collapsed property. Minister of Social Solidarity Nevine El-Qabbaj instructed EGP 60,000 in compensation to be paid to the families of the deceased and the injured parties, the media also notes.
Five other people, passersby, were injured in the incident. One person was trapped under the rubble after the collapse.
The incident comes following several similar unfortunate building disasters so far this year. A building collapsed in Beheira on Sunday killing three people, including a 10-year-old child, “Ahram Online” notes.
On Saturday, two people lost their lives after an old building collapsed in Alexandria. Another two-storey building collapsed in the Gomrok neighborhoud of west Alexandria on 6 July, resulting in one fatality.
