Morocco, Germany to launch multidimensional strategic dialogue next year
Morocco and Germany agreed on Thursday in Berlin to launch next year the Multidimensional Strategic Dialogue agreed upon in 2022. This dialogue will serve as a basis for moving forward in bilateral relations and strengthen coherence between the different areas of bilateral cooperation.
The announcement came at the end of a meeting between Foreign Minister, Nasser Bourita, who was on a working visit to Germany, and his German peer Annalena Baerbock.
Bourita’s visit to Germany is part of the implementation of the Strategic Dialogue established between the two countries under the joint declaration adopted during Baerbock’s visit to Morocco on August 25, 2022.
The Strategic Dialogue is scheduled to take place once every two years, alternately in Morocco and Germany, under the chairmanship of the Foreign Ministers of both countries.
The establishment of this Strategic Dialogue is part of the two countries’ shared commitment to strengthening dialogue, political, economic, cultural and interpersonal relations, promoting democracy, the rule of law and good governance, developing trade and investment, and cooperating on climate policy, biodiversity policy and green energy solutions.
This Strategic Dialogue will be based on shared values and mutual respect, with the aim of consolidating the principles and foundations of relations between Morocco and Germany, with a view to preserving and strengthening the priority interests of both countries.
At a joint press conference held at the end of their talks, the German official hailed Morocco as a long-standing leader in the fight against climate change, thanks to the initiatives of King Mohammed VI.
Through its various actions and its ambitious national objective to reduce CO2 emissions, Morocco has adopted the best standards in the region in the fight against climate change, stressed the head of German diplomacy.
These efforts are crowned by “very concrete” results, she said, citing, among others, the Noor solar power plant, which supplies 1.3 million people with clean electrical energy.
She also welcomed the partnership between Germany and the Kingdom in terms of energy transition, adding that bilateral cooperation in the field of green hydrogen was at the heart of her discussions with Bourita and that the two countries are determined to work together on projects in the renewable energy sector.
German-Moroccan talks also covered climate change and the two countries’ shared desire to advocate an ambitious international commitment to combat and mitigate the effects of climate change; ways to expand the scope of cooperation to new sectors, notably renewable energies, infrastructure, and digitalization, the relevance of their long-standing security partnership; and their close collaboration in the field of migration management.
The two sides underlined the convergence of their views on a range of regional and international issues, and pledged to pursue consultation and coordination, notably on the situation in Libya, the Sahel and the Middle East.
