Tunisian police officer at Brazilian Embassy dies of wounds after stabbing attack

A Tunisian police officer guarding the Brazilian Embassy in capital Tunis died of his wounds at hospital after he was stabbed by a man identified as university teacher.

Faker Bouzghaya, the spokesman for the Interior ministry told State-run news agency TAP that the 33-year police officer passed away in hospital after he was stabbed during the day, in front of the Brazilian diplomatic mission, in the capital Tunis.

The attacker, 53, according to the ministry official, has been admitted to hospital after he was shot in the leg by security forces there, as they tried to arrest him.

The spokesman, citing the family of the attacker, said the 53-year old man is suffering from psychological troubles.

The spokesman said the attacker is unknown to security forces, has no crime record and he is not affiliated to any political party. The attack occurred one month after another at a Jewish synagogue on the Island of Djerba, in which six people, including the attacker, died.
