French football legend Luis Fernandez touted as new Madagascar soccer head coach
Luis Fernandez, French legend and former coach of Qatar-owned Paris Saint Germain (PSG) is leading the shortlist of future coaches of Madagascar’s football association’s choices for the national team, L’Express de Madagascar reports.
The association has drawn up a shortlist of 9 expats to replace French Nicolas Depuis who stepped down in March after the back-to-back defeat to Central African Republic (CAR).
The appointment of the new head coach should be made public as late as early next week. The new manager’s mission will be to qualify the national team to the African Cup of National 2022 in Cote d’Ivoire, which will kick off in January next year.
The team still have two matches to place, one with Ghana on home soil on Jun 12.
The future coach’s assignment is limited to those two matches. A new technician will be determined by a new association as the current management team of the Malagasy soccer team headed by Victorien Andrianony is coming to a close in September. Fernandez, 63, played at PSG, RC Paris and Cannes at senior level in clubs. He also earned 60 international caps and scored 6 goals for the France national team between 1982 and 1992, and was part of their teams that won UEFA Euro 1984 and came third at the 1986 FIFA World Cup.
The man also had a long spell as coach in several clubs including PSG in addition to Guinea national team that he headed from 2005 to 2006.
