A civilian and three security forces, killed in a separatist attack in Cameroon

Three security forces and one civilian were shot dead Monday at a checkpoint in an attack in Moungo department, in the littoral region, that Cameroonian authorities blamed on separatists fighting to break away from Yaounde.
“On Monday morning, heavily armed separatists opened fire on the Matouké checkpoint in the Bona-Léa district of the Moungo department. The attack left one soldier, one gendarme, one policeman and one civilian dead”, Ernest Mpocko, Mayor of Moungo told Anadolu News agency.
“They attacked and retreated into the bushes along the southwestern region,” he added.
Cameroon has slid into civil war since 2016 opposing Anglophone separatists and the central government in Yaounde. The separatists protest discrimination by the Francophone majority.
The United Nations says the fighting has since killed at least 3,500 people and displaced 750,000. The attack came after the Minister of Defense during a meeting in capital Yaounde indicated that the armed forces have full control of the situation on the ground. Authorities claim life is getting back to normalcy though there are still pockets of resistance.
