Kenya: Bandits kill three police officers during a gun attack
The Kenyan police Sunday said three of its officers were shot dead by bandits in Napeimoit, Turkana County, during a gun battle, Nation Africa reports.
The victims include two General Service Unit (GSU) and a regular police officer. They came under attack in ambush by the gang, believed from a neighboring county, as they revisited a scene they attacked Friday night.
The raiders also seriously injured at least seven others, including an Officer Commanding Police Division and GSU and Rapid Deployment Unit commanders, a police report said.
The report also indicated that a civilian who was in one of the police vehicles sustained gunshot wounds.
A report filed at Kalemnng’orok police post, a multi-agency security team had revisited a Friday night attack scene, five kilometres off the Lodwar-Kitale road, when it was ambushed, Nation Africa reported. “While at the scene, bandits started firing at them from the bush. Officers recovered the bodies of the three, who had gone missing,” the report said.
“The tyres of the three Toyota Landcruisers were deflated in the attack. The vehicles are still at the scene, with one burnt and the others vandalized,” the report adds.
The attackers stripped the bodies naked and fled with their weapons and uniforms.
The Sunday attack followed another attack on Saturday in Laikipia County. A police report indicated that more than 20 bandits attacked the camp at around 4pm on Saturday and started shooting at the officers.
“A shout-out ensued between the officers and the bandits and in the process, Bernard Kyalo of Munyangi Police Station, Nyeri County was fatally shot whereby the bullet entered from the back of the head and exited through the mouth,” the report states.
“Officers from Kamwenje GSU camp, QRU A3, ASTU Miteta and Ng’arua Police station responded but the bandits had already escaped towards Baringo Escarpment,” the report adds.
