“Rabat, a Heritage of Humanity” urban exhibition; National Jewelry Museum inaugurated over weekend

Princess Lalla Hasnaa, President of the Foundation for the Safeguard of the Cultural Heritage of Rabat, inaugurated on Sunday the urban exhibition, dubbed “Rabat, a heritage of humanity”, in celebration of the tenth anniversary of the inscription of the Moroccan capital on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

This exhibition, which proposes to rediscover the registered heritage of Rabat from a different perspective, aims to shed light on the city’s great history that has been layered in its monuments, its urban planning, its landscape and its tangible and intangible heritage.

The exhibition proposes to revisit this trajectory and heritage through new photographs, the history of places, and the visits of outstanding men and women to the city, the aim being to change the collective perception of places and forge an awareness that encompasses almost two millennia of history.

The Foundation for the Safeguard of the Cultural Heritage of Rabat seeks to make known the cultural heritage of the capital city to the public, to facilitate the understanding of the city’s world heritage and to raise awareness as to the need to preserve this heritage.

Particular emphasis is placed on the work of the Moroccan craftsman, custodian of a long tradition of decorative arts that is expressed since the Almohad era until the modern era where a fusion of earlier traditions with the architecture of the twentieth century took place.

During the exhibition inauguration, the eight components forming the heritage of the city of Rabat registered on the World Heritage List and highlighted in the context of this urban exhibition, were presented to Princess Lalla Hasnaa.

These components are the new city of the twentieth century, the Habous district of Diour Jamaa, the botanical test garden, the medina of Rabat, the Almohad ramparts and gates, the Hassan Mosque and the Mohammed V Mausoleum, the Kasbah of the Oudayas and the archaeological site of Chellah.

Beyond the exhibition, the Foundation for the Safeguard of the Cultural Heritage of Rabat offers to continue the visit of the city with podcasts, where well-known voices of public figures and experts of different generations relate stories about Rabat and its landmark places, its history, its culture, and collective memories, never documented before. The podcasts are available on the website of the Foundation for the Safeguarding of the Cultural Heritage of Rabat https://fspcrabat.ma/podcasts/.

On Saturday, Princess Lalla Hasnaa presided over the inauguration of the National Jewlry Museum located at the Kasbah of Oudayas.
The jewelry are displayed in various exhibition halls, dedicated to “The historical development of the finery and the chain of manufacture”; “The history of Moroccan costume”; “The male finery and harness”; “The Amazigh jewelry”; and “The regional specificities of the main production centers of urban jewelry”.

The temporary exhibition hall of the Museum is currently displaying the works of three Moroccan designers, namely Tamy Tazi, Zhor Raïs and Albert Oiknine.
