Nigeria: Gunmen kill traditional ruler of Obudi Agwa in Imo state

Gunmen have mowed down the traditional ruler of Obudi Agwa in Nigeria’s Imo state, in an incident authorities blame on Biafran separatists.

The state police public relations officer, Mike Abattam, confirmed the attack to local media.

Unidentified gunmen reportedly visited Monday the palace in Oguta under the guise of reporting an emergency situation before opening fire, Africa News reports.

The gunmen also attacked the office of a community vigilance group as they fled, killing at least one person and stealing three motorbikes.

The separatists, demanding a breakaway from Nigeria and establishment of a state of Biafra in the southeast of the country, have not commented on government blame.

Biafra declared independence from Nigeria and existed from 1967 until 1970.
