Sahara: El Salvador Views Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as Major Step Forward towards Realistic Solution

The Government of El Salvador has reaffirmed its strong support to the efforts made by Morocco for reaching a realistic, pragmatic and lasting solution to the Sahara issue, describing the autonomy plan offered by the North African Kingdom under its sovereignty as a major step forward towards achieving a peaceful resolution to this regional dispute.

In a joint statement issued following a meeting held lately in Rabat with Moroccan foreign minister Nasser Bourita, El Salvador top diplomat Alexandra Hill reiterated her country’s supportive stand of Morocco’s territorial integrity, praising Rabat’s serious efforts engaged to find a peaceful, practical and enduring resolution of the Sahara regional conflict.

During their talks, the two ministers agreed to convene as soon as possible the 2nd meeting of political consultations between the two countries. They discussed latest developments on the regional & international scene, bilateral relationship and cooperation ties in the sectors of health, water, energy, tourism and handicrafts.

During her trip to Morocco, the FM of El Salvador opened her country’s embassy in Rabat, the first of its kind in Africa.

“The opening of the first embassy of El Salvador in Africa, here in Rabat, reflects the excellence of bilateral relations,” she said, describing the event as a historic moment in Salvadoran foreign policy.
