Portuguese PM describes as “fundamental” electricity interconnection with Morocco
Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa has described as “fundamental” the power grids interconnection between his country and Morocco, affirming that the North African Kingdom could be an alternative for the supply of Europe with clean energy.
“The interconnection with Morocco is fundamental. If we can produce solar energy at a lower price, Morocco, for many reasons, will be able to do so,” said Mr. Costa during a parliamentary debate.
“Morocco can supply Europe with solar energy in a consistent manner,” said the Portuguese Prime Minister, noting that “this is a new niche of cooperation with Africa that we can and must develop to ensure energy security and avoid disruptions”.
Portugal “could be a gateway for clean energy or clean transition energy”, he added, saying that that Europe “should diversify its energy sources and should no longer depend on Russia, Turkey or Algeria”.
