Morocco suspends cooperation with German embassy in Rabat
Morocco has decided to halt all contacts with German Embassy in Rabat due to “deep disagreements” with Berlin regarding the Kingdom’s “fundamental issues”.
In a note addressed to Head of the Govt. Saad Eddine El Othmani and all members of the cabinet, Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita has called on all ministries and governmental bodies “to suspend all contacts, interaction or cooperation, in any case or in any form, with the German Embassy in Morocco as well as with German cooperation organizations and political foundations”.
“Any derogation to this decision must be approved by the Moroccan Foreign Ministry,” said the leaked letter dated March 1st.
The letter does not disclose the exact reasons behind the decision of Morocco’s top diplomat to stop all contacts with the German Embassy, triggering a widespread speculation.
Moroccan media citing unnamed diplomatic sources, said the move comes after an accumulation of “disrespect” by Germany for Morocco.
A source told news outlet Hespress that Germany had reacted in a way hostile to Morocco’s position on the Sahara issue and asked the UN to convene an urgent meeting following Trump’s recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara.
The same source said that Germany had failed to invite Morocco to a high-level summit on Libya held in Berlin.
Another news website Yabiladi, for its part, said that German spies might be the reason of Morocco’s decision to suspend all contact with the embassy and related political organizations.
