Liberia to join African states with consulates in Morocco’s Sahara
Liberia will be the next state to have an embassy in Morocco’s southern provinces amid a rise in African states backing Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over its southern territory.
The announcement was made in Rabat Friday by Liberia’s foreign minister Gbehzohngar Findley who voiced satisfaction with the close ties with Morocco where his country has an embassy in Rabat and a consulate in Casablanca. He said Liberia intends to further broaden its consular services to the Sahara region.
Morocco’s foreign minister Nasser Bourita thanked Liberia for its steady support to Morocco’s territorial integrity while recalling that Liberia has never shied away from backing Morocco at diplomatic fora.
Djibouti and Burundi were the latest in a series of African countries that opened consular services in the Sahara on the footsteps of Côte d’Ivoire, the Comoros, Gabon, Central African Republic, Sao Tome and Principe, which opened consular missions in Laayoune, in addition to Gambia and Guinea which chose to open a consulate in Dakhla.
