Moroccan construction firm SGTM to upgrade Fez stadium ahead of 2030 World Cup

Moroccan construction leader SGTM has been awarded a key contract worth 2.825 billion (approximately $285 million) for the first lot of modernization works on the Fez Sports Complex, a pivotal venue in Morocco’s preparations to co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup with Spain and Portugal.

According to the tender minutes published by the National Agency for Public Equipment (ANEP), the evaluation committee completed its review on October 2, 2026.

SGTM’s bid edged out the competing offer from a consortium of Entreprise Moussadak Bouchta (EMB) and Inter Tridim.

The 20-month contract covers critical structural and finishing works, including demolition and removal operations, heavy civil engineering (gros œuvres), waterproofing, steel framework, roofing and façades, floor and wall coverings, false ceilings, joinery, and painting.

These interventions form the core of the second major phase of upgrades for the Fez stadium, which already underwent significant renovations ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

The project aims to bring the complex fully in line with FIFA standards for the 2030 tournament, with an emphasis on sustainability, including energy efficiency targets, reduced water consumption, and high environmental quality certifications.

Fez is one of six Moroccan venues earmarked for World Cup matches, alongside the new flagship Grand Stade Hassan II in Benslimane and upgraded stadiums in Marrakech, Agadir, Rabat, and Tangier.

This latest award further cements SGTM’s central role in Morocco’s ambitious sports infrastructure program.

The Casablanca-listed group, which completed a high-profile IPO in December 2025 that was oversubscribed more than 30 times, is already a lead partner with TGCC in delivering the 115,000-seat Grand Stade Hassan II, poised to become one of the world’s largest football stadiums.

Domestic companies have repeatedly prevailed in competitive international tenders for complex, high-value projects, from mega-stadiums and high-speed rail stations to ports, airports, and dams. Their ability to deliver large-scale civil works on tight timelines, while meeting stringent technical and sustainability requirements, reflects decades of accumulated expertise, strong local supply chains, and increasing technical sophistication.
