Arab League pushes for active role in artificial intelligence development

The Arab League has called on its specialized organizations and member States to play an active role in developing Artificial intelligence rather than remain passive users of the technology.

Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy made the call on Wednesday, 9 September 2026, at the opening of the second “Artificial Intelligence Towards the Future 2026” summit in Hammamet, Tunisia.

Fahmy described AI as an essential pillar of sustainable development and urged participants to support modernisation through a coordinated regional approach. He identified capacity-building, improvements to regional cooperation mechanisms and preparing Arab youth for emerging challenges as key priorities.

The two-day summit, scheduled for 9 and 10 September 2026, is being held under the theme, “Shaping the Future of Artificial Intelligence: From Vision to Value”. The event brings together key stakeholders to discuss the future of AI in the region.
