Morocco Hosts 1st Summit of World Merit Councils

The first edition of the World Merit Councils Summit, bringing together change-makers from around the world, opened Tuesday at Mohammed VI Polytechnic University of Ben Guerir, near Marrakech, to discuss inclusive opportunities and ways to empower youth to build a better future.

Over 150 young volunteers and professionals from 125 countries are taking part in the event, to last until Feb. 24. Debates will focus on local and global actions made to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The UN SDGs seek to end by the year 2030 poverty and hunger in the world, achieve food security, promote sustainable agriculture, ensure healthy lives, inclusive and equitable quality education, encourage learning opportunities for all, promote gender equality and empower all women and girls.

The Sustainable Development Goals also include ensuring availability of water for all, access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all.

The SDGs feature actions to combat climate change, desertification, land degradation and stress the need to promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and enhance global partnership for sustainable development.

World Merit, which has a program dedicated to SDGs, is a global community of millennials, taking actions to make a positive difference both locally and across the world.

Together with the United Nations, World Merit focuses on tackling the Sustainable Development Goals, aiming to end extreme poverty, fix climate change and get rid of inequality. Its online platform connects young global citizens and provides a place to debate on global issues, collaborate on projects and showcases their impact.

Each month, this NGO sets a number of different challenges that enable World merit members to develop their skills whilst making a positive impact. These challenges are rewarded with life-changing opportunities.

The NGO seeks to unleash the upcoming generation of local and global leaders to create waves of positive change.
