Morocco adds its voices to nations rebuking UEFA chief over World Cup comments

Morocco lent its weight to a group of football federations from Cape Verde, Curaçao, Uzbekistan, Congo and Haiti, which jointly criticised UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin over remarks on the expansion of the FIFA World Cup, saying his comments downplayed the significance of participation for smaller nations.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the five federations expressed “deep disappointment” at Čeferin’s suggestion that some matches in the expanded 48-team tournament could be “without interest”.

“For our countries, no World Cup match is without importance,” the statement said, stressing that qualification represents years of work and sacrifice.

The federations pointed to the first-ever appearances of Cape Verde, Curaçao and Uzbekistan, as well as the return of Congo and Haiti after long absences, describing them as historic achievements for players and supporters alike.

“Suggesting that these matches are less important is deeply disappointing,” the statement added, saying such views risk overlooking the efforts of teams, staff and fans.

The signatories defended the enlarged format, arguing that the World Cup’s value lies in its global nature and its ability to bring together teams from different regions and football traditions. They said participation can help accelerate development and inspire younger generations.

Morocco’s backing is seen by analysts as particularly significant, given its recent performances on the world stage and its growing role in African football. Its support reinforces calls for greater recognition of emerging teams and their achievements.

“Each team earned its place on the field. Every match matters,” the federations said.
