Madagascar Supports Morocco’s Territorial Integrity and Autonomy Plan for Sahara, Praises Adoption of Resolution 2797

Madagascar, committed to the principle of the territorial integrity of UN Member States, has expressed its support for the respect of Morocco’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

This position was expressed in a joint communiqué issued following talks in Rabat on Tuesday between Madagascar’s Foreign Minister, Alice N’Diaye and her Moroccan peer Nasser Bourita.

In this joint communiqué, Madagascar also reiterated its support for the exclusive role of the United Nations, as well as the efforts of the Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy for the settlement of the dispute over the Sahara.

In this connection, Madagascar welcomed the adoption of Resolution 2797 by the United Nations Security Council, affirming that a “genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty could be one of the most feasible solutions.”

The Republic of Madagascar also expressed its support for the Morocco-proposed Autonomy Initiative, which falls within the continuation of the growing international consensus around this initiative, generated by the momentum driven by King Mohammed VI.

During their talks, the two officials reaffirmed the two countries’ shared determination to strengthen their relations in a spirit of South-South cooperation, and underlined that the dynamic bilateral relations reflect the strength of the ties of friendship, mutual respect, and cooperation binding them.

The head of Malagasy diplomacy, who praised the quality of the relations uniting the two countries, recalled the undeniable and tangible impact of the 2016 visit by King Mohammed VI to Madagascar, which helped to further consolidate and revitalize bilateral cooperation in several areas, and contributed to the consolidation of sustainable development achievements in this friendly country.

The two officials welcomed the opening of the Madagascar’s Embassy in Rabat in November 2024, as the diplomatic institution gives new impetus to bilateral relations and consolidates the firm will to strengthen cooperation between the two countries.

They agreed to elevate the partnership between the two nations to higher levels, in accordance with the vision and will of King Mohammed VI and Colonel Michaël Randrianirina, President of Madagascar.

In this regard, it was agreed to hold the 2nd session of the Joint Cooperation Commission in the coming months, on a date to be mutually agreed upon through diplomatic channels. The objective is to give more substance to and diversify the areas of cooperation, with a focus on priority and high-potential sectors such as agriculture, health, renewable energy, training and capacity building, youth employability, and security.
