The United States and Morocco have signed a new Sensitive Security Information sharing agreement to strengthen cooperation on civil aviation security.
The announcement was made by the U.S. embassy in a post on its X account, saying the agreement has been sealed to ensure the security and safety of the two countries travelers, transportation networks, and economies.
“By deepening coordination and sharing critical security information, our countries are working together to address emerging threats, protect vital infrastructure, and reinforce a safer future for travelers on both sides of the Atlantic,” said the U.S. embassy.
According to experts, the agreement enables more rapid exchanges of intelligence on specific threats, greater coordination in the event of high alerts, and closer harmonization of airport security standards, especially at airports with direct flights to the United States.
Morocco has become a regional aviation and logistics hub between Europe, Africa, and North America. The country has increased investments in airport infrastructure and passenger screening systems in preparation for the anticipated growth in international traffic at the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which it will co-host with Spain and Portugal.
Morocco and the United States are strengthening their strategic partnership not only in defense, economy and investment but also in border security, intelligence, cybersecurity, and infrastructure protection.
The two countries have a long history of strong cooperation in counter-terrorism. Moroccan law enforcement agencies have participated in a wide range of U.S.-sponsored programs to improve the country’s technical and investigative capabilities, including financial investigation, intelligence analysis, forensics, and cybersecurity.
Border security remains a top priority for Moroccan authorities. Law enforcement officials and private airline carriers worked regularly with the United States to detect and deter individuals attempting to transit illegally and to address watchlisted travelers. Moroccan airport authorities have excellent capabilities in detecting fraudulent documents and high-risk travelers. Morocco also enjoys strong cooperation with several European countries to thwart potential terrorist threats in Europe.
