Mauritania’s consumer protection body has criticized recent increases in fuel prices, warning that the adjustments will deepen the economic hardship faced by citizens. The Forum of Consumers in Mauritania said the price hikes were not implemented progressively, raising concerns over their sudden impact on households already grappling with rising living costs.
The group noted that the increases risk worsening socio-economic conditions, particularly for low-income populations, as fuel costs feed directly into transport fares and the prices of basic goods. The criticism follows a broader trend of rising fuel prices across Africa, driven by global market pressures, with Mauritania recently increasing petrol and diesel prices as part of ongoing economic adjustments.
Consumer advocates are therefore urging authorities to adopt a more gradual and socially sensitive pricing approach to cushion vulnerable groups and maintain economic stability.
