Morocco Positions Itself as a Global Green Hydrogen and Maritime Decarbonization Hub

Morocco is emerging as one of the world’s most credible candidates for green hydrogen production and maritime fuel supply, according to a World Bank analysis recently cited by the Moroccan daily L’Economiste. The Kingdom’s combination of strategic geography, abundant renewable energy resources, and low-cost hydrogen production potential places it at the forefront of the global energy transition — particularly for the shipping sector.
Morocco’s major ports — Tanger Med, Mohammedia, Jorf Lasfar, and Tan-Tan — are identified as natural candidates to become integrated hubs for green hydrogen production, storage, and export. Demand projections are significant: vessels calling at Moroccan ports could require approximately 0.2 million Metonnes of hydrogen-equivalent fuel by 2030, rising to 2.83 million tonnes by 2050. That hydrogen would primarily be converted into ammonia or methanol — green fuels capable of progressively replacing fossil energy in maritime transport.
Jorf Lasfar already processes around two million tonnes of ammonia annually, giving Morocco a ready industrial base from which to integrate green hydrogen derivatives into existing supply chains. Beyond shipping, surplus renewable energy generated through hydrogen production could support local electricity access and drinking water supply — amplifying community-level benefits.
The European dimension adds further strategic weight. Under its REPowerEU initiative, the European Union aims to import over 10 million tonnes of green hydrogen annually by 2030. Morocco’s proximity, its access to Atlantic and Mediterranean shipping lanes, and its production scalability make it a natural supplier for that demand. The Strait of Gibraltar further reinforces the Kingdom’s role as a distribution gateway into European markets.
The World Bank also highlights the sector’s economic upside — new revenue streams, job creation, and strengthened energy independence. For Morocco, green hydrogen is not merely an environmental ambition; it represents a cornerstone of its long-term strategy to become a major player in the global clean energy economy.
