Khartoum is facing a sharp rise in epidemics and childhood diseases as nearly three years of conflict have crippled Sudan’s healthcare system, local authorities reported on Tuesday.
The April 2023 war has triggered severe medicine shortages, destroyed medical infrastructure, and disrupted basic services. In the sixth week of 2026, the state’s Emergency Operations Centre recorded 10,361 malaria cases, 467 dengue cases, and 52 scabies cases in Karari and East Nile localities.
Authorities noted an increase in measles and other childhood illnesses, worsened by militia looting that damaged vaccine cold chains. Mohamed Tijani, Khartoum’s director of emergencies, said the ministry plans to intensify rapid response measures during Ramadan, including meningitis detection training. The ministry appealed for international support, especially for malaria medicines, and urged residents to prevent mosquito breeding by draining stagnant water weekly.
