UN Security Council Extends AU Mission in Somalia Through 2026

The UN Security Council on Tuesday adopted a resolution extending the mandate of the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) through 2026.

AUSSOM, which replaced a previous transition mission in January, continues to support Somali security forces in the fight against Al Shabab. In August, Somali forces and AUSSOM recaptured the strategic town of Bariire, about 100 kilometres west of Mogadishu.

The resolution maintains the mission’s troop ceiling at 11,826 personnel, including 680 police officers, while highlighting persistent underfunding concerns. The measure was backed by 14 Council members, with the United States abstaining.
