Morocco overtakes Spain as main watermelon supplier in EU

Moroccan watermelon exports to the European Union have soared by more than 53%, according to trade data from Euroestacom, positioning Morocco as the EU’s leading supplier of the fruit ahead of Spain.

Between January and June, Morocco shipped over 130,000 tons of watermelons to EU markets, up from approximately 85,000 tons during the same period the previous year, the same source said.

This sharp increase follows a dip in 2024, marking a strong rebound for the sector, it said.

The main destinations for Moroccan watermelons were Spain and France, where the fruit is in high demand during the summer months.

The average export price hovered around €0.91 per kilogram, making Moroccan produce competitive in European markets.
