Malawi reiterates support for Morocco’s territorial integrity, praises royal initiatives for Africa

Malawi reaffirmed, on Thursday in Rabat, its support for Morocco’s territorial integrity, and for the Kingdom’s sovereignty over all its territory, including the Moroccan Sahara region, and praised King Mohammed VI’s initiatives for Africa.

The position was expressed in a joint statement that crowned talk held Thursday in Rabat between visiting Malawian Foreign Minister, Nancy Tembo, and her Moroccan peer Nasser Bourita.

In the statement, Tembo also welcomed the growing international consensus and momentum in favor of the Moroccan Autonomy Plan, describing the plan as the only credible, serious and realistic solution to the Sahara issue.

She likewise welcomed the efforts of the United Nations as the exclusive framework for achieving a realistic, practical and lasting solution to the Sahara regional dispute.

The Malawian Foreign Minister also hailed the Atlantic and Sahel initiatives launched by King Mohammed VI for a stable and prosperous Africa.

She stressed in this connection that President Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera of Malawi has described the royal initiative to promote access to the Atlantic Ocean for Sahel States as an enlightened initiative and an opportunity for intra-African cooperation.

During their talks, the two Foreign Ministers vowed to further strengthen cooperation between Morocco and Malawi at the bilateral and multilateral levels.

At the bilateral level, they committed to further strengthening cooperation, mainly in food security, as the Kingdom is set to support Malawi in developing sustainable agriculture.

At the multilateral level, Bourita and Tembo stressed the importance of further harmonizing their positions within regional, continental, and international institutions, such as the African Union (AU) and the United Nations (UN), says the joint statement.
