Morocco: Daesh supporter arrested in Taourirt

The judicial police arrested, in the northeastern city of Taourirt on Wednesday, an individual steeped in the extremist ideology of the terrorist organization Daesh. He was working as a teacher in Sidi Chafi village in the province of Taourirt.

This operation, conducted based on intelligence provided by the General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST), underscores Morocco’s efforts to eliminate the risks of terrorist threats and prevent extremist plots that threaten the security and stability of the Kingdom, the Central Bureau of Judicial Investigations (BCIJ) said in a statement.

Following searches carried out at the suspect’s home, the police seized chemical materials likely intended for manufacturing homemade explosive devices. The materials included vials containing hydrochloric acid, hydrogen peroxide and zinc sulfate, which were submitted for forensic examination. Edged weapons of various sizes, cell phones, and electronic devices were also seized.

Preliminary findings from the investigation indicate that the suspect had been gathering information on materials and techniques for manufacturing explosives, and their use in terrorist plots aimed at causing significant harm to individuals and disrupting public order.

The suspect has been placed under custody at the BCIJ for further questioning, under the supervision of the terrorism prosecutor’s office, to identify all his terrorist targets, as well as his links to possible accomplices.
