Chad: Tensions rise as gunfire erupts near presidential compound

Gunfire erupted near the presidential palace in N’Djamena Wednesday evening, raising concerns about stability in the Central African nation. Military vehicles and heavily armed soldiers were deployed throughout the capital’s streets as shots rang out for several minutes near the presidential compound.

According to the government, the clashes left 18 attackers and one security personnel member dead and several others injured.

The incident comes just days after Chad’s contested parliamentary elections, which major opposition parties boycotted. These elections were positioned as a crucial step toward democratic restoration, though results remain pending. Military presence intensified in the capital as security forces established defensive positions around key government installations.

Speaking from inside the presidential palace, surrounded by armed personnel, Chad’s Foreign Affairs Minister Abderaman Koulamallah attempted to calm public fears, asserting the situation was “completely under control” and emphasizing the military’s commitment to defending the president.

The current administration is led by President Mahamat Deby Itno who assumed power following his father’s death in 2021. The elder Deby had governed Chad for three decades before being killed during combat operations against rebel forces. The younger Deby secured victory in recent presidential elections, though international observers raised significant concerns about the vote’s legitimacy.

The incident has prompted heightened security measures throughout the capital as authorities work to maintain order.
