Terror Threat: UK advises against all travel to Algeria’s borders with Libya, Mauritania, Mali, Niger & Libya

The growing insecurity in Algeria and heightened geopolitical tensions have pushed the UK foreign Office to issue a new warning against all travel to within 30km of Algeria’s borders with Libya, Mauritania, Mali, Niger, and Tunisia.

According to British authorities, the “threat from terrorism is higher” in some parts of Algeria, especially in the southern borders and the Libyan and Tunisian borders.

The main terrorist threat is from Al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) and other regional Islamist groups including Al Murabitun and Daesh affiliates. There’s also a threat from individuals inspired by Daesh. These groups have been active across the country.

Terrorist groups had kidnapped in Algeria foreigners, government officials and civilians in the region for financial gain and for political leverage.

The authoritarian Algerian regime, which has strained relations with all its neighbors, is currently rocked by a growing popular discontent and unprecedented political and economic crises. The country is on the verge of implosion, following the collapse of Assad dictatorship.
