Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline in land acquisition stage
A gas pipeline that will connect Nigeria to Morocco has reached the land acquisition stage, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNCPL) said.
Surveys are currently underway for Environmental and Social Impact Assessments of the project that will cost some 25 billion dollars and benefit 13 countries in West Africa.
The update was given at the recently concluded Joint Meeting of the Ministers of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and officials from Mauritania and Morocco.
“These achievements underscore our shared capacity and resolve to bring this pipeline project to fruition, demonstrating both the project’s viability and our capability for effective execution, supported by strong regional collaboration, which we continue to appreciate.” Mele Kyari, NNPCL Chief Executive said.
The project has been spearheaded by Morocco’s King as a key component of the Kingdom’s south-south cooperation approach.
It has been backed by former and current Nigerian president as well as the West African economic grouping, ECOWAS.
A multilateral deal that will define the terms of use and management of the pipeline, is expected by the end of 2024.
The first phase of the pipeline will connect the existing Nigeria-Ghana pipeline to Cote D’Ivoire, while the second phase will link Morocco’s Maghreb- Europe pipeline to Senegal. The final step consists in linking Senegal to Cote D’Ivoire.
