Tunisia: Customs foil attempt to smuggle 83 rifles
Customs officers from the Passenger Inspection Brigade, in collaboration with the X-ray detection team at the port of La Goulette, made a significant seizure of hunting rifles concealed within the trailer of a vehicle driven by a Tunisian citizen returning from Italy.
The Tunisian General Directorate of Customs said in a statement that the vehicle’s owner claimed he had nothing to declare beyond the list of permitted items. However, one of the customs officers, after inspecting the car and passing it through an X-ray scanner, became suspicious due to the trailer’s unusually heavy weight and suspected it might contain contraband.
Upon conducting a thorough inspection, officers discovered 83 dismantled hunting rifles hidden within a specially prepared cache. The case has been referred to the relevant security services for further investigation.
