Is Uganda’s Museveni preparing his son for succession?

Ugandan president Yoweri Museveni promoted his 49-year-old son to top commander of the army, in a move that signals he is preparing him to succession.

Museveni’s son, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has been touring the country to “spread patriotism” among Ugandans, in a clear violation of a law that bans serving army officers from partaking in politics.

Kainerugba had said on twitter that he intended to run for presidency but he deleted the tweet later.

Museveni and Kainerugaba have both denied the existence of a scheme to propel him to the presidency, but the appointment of the latter to army chief, accompanied by a ministerial reshuffle, suggests a transition may be under way

Kainerugaba previously served as commander of land forces but was removed from the position after threatening to invade neighboring Kenya, which he later said was a joke.

Last year, Kainerugaba declared that Uganda would “send soldiers to defend Moscow if it’s ever threatened by the Imperialists,” chiding Western nations for sharing “useless pro-Ukraine propaganda.”
