AfDB supports Morocco’s healthcare in rural areas with €120 Mln funding

The African Development Bank has announced a €120-million funding to support Morocco’s efforts to improve women-children’s healthcare in rural areas, especially in the regions of Beni Mellal-Khenifra, Draa-Tafilalet and Guelmim-Oued Noun.

The bank’s financial support is destined to improve access to healthcare centers, modernize health services through innovative solutions that improve connectivity and streamline their governance with better staffing and financial resources.

The funding will help to set up women’s and children’s care units at the new Guelmim Regional Hospital and the Fkih Ben Salah Provincial Hospital.

It will also be used for the building and equipping hospitals in the targeted regions (construction of the Beni-Mellal Regional Hospital Center and the Azilal Provincial Hospital Center, and equipping the Fkih Ben Salah Provincial Hospital Center).

As to remote health sites, they will be equipped with telemedicine and tele-consultation facilities.

Over the past two decades, Morocco has made major investments in the health sector. Maternal and infant mortality and the coverage of key maternal and child health services have improved.

Morocco is committed to implementing the “Health 2025” Plan to improve access to quality healthcare. The plan seeks to expand healthcare coverage, set up a social assistance system for vulnerable families and overhaul both the health sector and the public education system.
