Morocco receives 111k Tons of grains under Black Sea Initiative

Morocco was among the countries that benefited from the resumption of grain shipments from Ukraine receiving so far 111.1K tons of grains, according to UN data.

The Black Sea Initiative was agreed between Russia and Ukraine following Turkish and UN mediation in 2022 to help secure safe food shipments, notably cereals.

Russia however said it would quit the pact due to restrictions facing its own food and fertilizers export as Western sanctions on payments and logistics tighten the noose on Moscow’s economy.

The last ship left a port in Ukraine on May 16 leaving uncertainties as to future cereals and grains shipments from the war-torn country that plays a key role in global food security and supply chains.

Besides Morocco, a major soft wheat buyer, other north African countries, namely Egypt, Algeria and Tunisia benefited from the resumption of Ukrainian exports.

Senior officials from Russia, Ukraine, Turkey, and the U.N. met in Istanbul last week to discuss the Black Sea pact, U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric said on Tuesday.

“Contacts are going on at different levels. We’re obviously in a delicate stage,” he said.
