Rabat & Berlin make joint financial contribution to Migration Multi-Partner Trust Fund
Morocco and Germany announced on Wednesday in Geneva a joint financial contribution for the Migration Multi-Partner Trust Fund (MPTF) of the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
By joining their efforts, the two countries confirm their commitment made during the Intergovernmental Conference to Adopt the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration organized by the UN in Marrakech in 2018.
Morocco’s Permanent Representative in Geneva, Omar Zniber, said that Morocco backs the MPTF and the Global Compact for Migration encouraging the migration approaches that benefit communities of origin, transit, and destination, as well as migrants.
The diplomat highlighted in this regard Morocco’s national migration strategy which is based on humanitarian approach, respect of the rights of migrants and asylum seekers, affirming that this strategy is in line with international agenda on migration.
He also reiterated Morocco’s commitment to the Marrakech Global Pact on Migration and the African migration agenda, saying the adherence of the North African Kingdom to these landmark international initiatives reflects its attachment to multilateralism.
Managing international migration challenges requires the cooperation at all level by all actors. Recognizing this reality, UN member States called for the creation of a fund to support efforts to implement the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM).
Following this call, the United Nations established the Migration Multi-Partner Trust Fund, a pooled funding instrument in migration. The Fund promotes fact-based and data-driven studies on migration, protects the rights of migrants and addresses irregular migration issues through better borders’ management and countering transnational crimes including human trafficking.
