Togo to ramp up measures to curb road accidents

Togo’s Minister of Security and Civil Protection Yark Damehane Monday indicated that the West African country will increase control on roads as part of efforts to curtail road accidents.

Damehane and his counterpart of the ministry of transport Affoh Atcha-Dédji presented the report on road accidents during the first half of the year.

The report revealed that 3,818 accidents in the West African country from January to June this year. 347 died in those incidents which also causes injuries to 4,863.

The figures are similar to those of last year; 3815 accidents and 346 deaths. The main causes according to the report presented by both officials are non-compliance with the code, driving under influence, and speeding.

“There is no need to raise awareness about the technical inspection, the use of helmets, seat belts or the telephone,” Damehane said. “The repression will intensify” he added.
