UNIDO supports Morocco’s industrial decabonization transition

The UN Industrial Development Organization has pledged to support Morocco’s energy transition from fossil fuels to clean-renewable energy sources in an effort to reduce CO2 emissions, whilst remaining competitive in global market.

The pledge was made by Director General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), Gerd Muller, who is paying this May 15-19 a working visit to Morocco, his first in the Arab world and Africa, since his nomination at the helm of the UN organization.

In this connection, UNIDO Chief Gerd Muller and minister of Industry Ryad Mezzour signed in Rabat Monday a joint statements pledging to foster Morocco-UNIDO partnership in industrial decarbonization and circular economy to strengthen the Kingdom’s economic competitiveness.

Kingdom’s efforts to phase down hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) in the industrial sector, build an Industrial Analysis Platform (IAP), encourage digital innovation projects & capacity building programs, technology transfer as well as advanced digital production, international trade and investment.

Morocco and UNIDO also agreed to step up partnership in green hydrogen through the development of industrial clusters and value chains aimed at contributing to the decarbonisation of industry.

“Our partnership with the UNIDO will enable Morocco take up major challenges, especially in industrial decarbonization for a more resilient, inclusive and sustainable development”, said Mr. Mezzour.

“This will undoubtedly contribute to achieving our goal of making Morocco the most competitive low-carbon industrial base in the world,” added the minister.

For his part, Mr. Muller said: “UNIDO will provide strong support to Morocco’s sustainable development efforts and new development model. As we join forces with other UN agencies, UNIDO will use its partnership to back the Kingdom’s renewable energy projects, circular economies and data-driven industry 4.0 to achieve the ambitious goals of decarbonization of the industrial sector as well as the SDGs”.

On this occasion, the Moroccan website: https://industrial-estate.gov.ma offering investors detailed and precise data on industrial zones, was launched. It was developed in collaboration with UNIDO, the Millennium Challenge Corporation and the MCA-Morocco Agency and other bodies.

During his visit to Morocco, UNIDO Director General Gerd Muller was received by Head of Govt. Aziz Akhannouch. They discussed ways of consolidating further partnership to facilitate technology transfer and boost the Kingdom’s industrial capabilities. He also held talks with Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita.
