Moroccan competition regulator edges closer to delivering fine on fuel distributors

Morocco’s competition council will unveil this week a heavy fine against fuel distributors that amount to 10% of their turnover for uncompetitive practices, local Moroccan media reported.

Citing a source close to the matter, le360.ma said the fine could amount to 4 billion dirhams ($400 million). The council’s board will meet on Thursday to make a decision.

The council has been holding meetings behind closed-doors with the plaintiffs: the CDT union and the professional union of transport professionals, on the one hand and nine fuel distributors on the other hand.

In a report in May, the council raised concerns about anti-competitive practices in the fuel distribution market including price agreements and the exchange of sensitive data, etc.

A fuel company was at the heart of a consumer boycott campaign in 2018 on the back of suspicions of unethical profits and oligopolistic situation in the market.
