Morocco calls for global multilateral solidarity in face of COVID-19

The coronavirus and the challenges relating to it have highlighted more than ever the need for multilateral solidarity as a principle of action, Morocco’s foreign minister Nasser Bourita said.

Speaking at a virtual meeting of the Alliance for Multilateralism held to discuss Covid-19 challenges, Bourita highlighted Morocco’s full support for multilateral action based on solidarity particularly with the African continent.

To materialize its ideals of multilateral solidarity, Morocco took the initiative to call for joint African response and support framework to help countries of the continent deal with the consequences of the pandemic

He also recalled the medical aid sent by Morocco to 15 African countries including 8 million masks, face shields, protective gear, sanitizers and medicine as a move that “gives substance to Morocco’s solidarity approach.”

Multilateral action is needed more than ever to respond to global challenges such as pandemics, he said.

Therefore, he called for reinforcing the UN in order to strengthen joint action and build on achievements.

The “Alliance for Multilateralism” launched by the French and German foreign ministers last year is an informal network of countries united in their conviction that a rules-based multilateral order is the only reliable guarantee for international stability and peace.
