Morocco significantly lowers coronavirus mortality rate

Morocco has adopted pro-active measures without dragging its feet adopting economically painful measures that helped curb the spread of the coronavirus and lower the mortality rate to 3.9%, one of the world lowest.

The number of recoveries is on the rise with 1055 people leaving hospital by May 1 amid 4529 patients while the number of deaths slowed to 171, mostly patients suffering from chronic illnesses.

The mortality rate per 100,000 stands at 0.48%, a figure that is far lower than 51.7% in Spain, 45.9% in Italy, 39.2% in the UK, 35.9 in France and 7.7% in Germany.

Morocco has announced May 20 to relax the lockdown but the interior minister Abdelouafi Laftit said such a decision hinges on the development of the situation in the upcoming days.

He stressed however that traveling between cities would be the last easing measure to be taken which means that many Moroccans will not be able to visit their loved ones as Eid Al Fitr will take place right in the week of May 20.

“We are studying all scenarios up to May 20 and beyond,” the minister told MPs.
