Ivanka Trump starts three-day visit to Morocco

Ivanka Trump, daughter and advisor to US President Donald Trump, arrived in Rabat this Wednesday for a three-day visit to the Kingdom.

Ivanka Trump, who is accompanied by CEO of the Millennium Challenge Corporation Sean Cairncross, was greeted upon arrival by Princess Princess Lalla Meryem, the eldest sister of King Mohammed VI.

The advisor to the US President will spend three days in Morocco focusing on the promotion of women’s empowerment as part of the White House-sponsored Women’s Global Development and Prosperity (W-GDP) initiative.

During her visit, she is expected to meet with government officials and local leaders in Rabat and Casablanca to discuss how to help women in the region gain a measure of economic independence. She will also visit Sidi Kacem.

On the eve of her visit, Mrs Trump said that Morocco has made big strides in promoting women’s rights and gender equality.

The kingdom of Morocco is a valued US ally that has “taken strides” under King Mohammed VI to promote gender equality, Ivanka told the Associated Press.

This would be her third overseas trip this year after the launch of the Women’s Global Development and Prosperity Initiative last February to help women in the developing world.

W-GDP seeks to reach 50 million women in the developing world by 2025 through US government activities, private-public partnerships, and a new, innovative fund.

When women become economically self-reliant, they re-invest in their families and communities, producing a multiplier effect that spurs economic growth and contributes to global peace and stability.

In a tweet last August, Ivanka said “We applaud the Moroccan government for this important step towards the adoption of inheritance law amendments, and look forward to supporting their full implementation.”

This is Ivanka Trump’s third trip in Africa to promote the W-GDP initiative, with previous trips to Ethiopia and Côte d’Ivoire.
