Spain’s Air Europa resumes flights to Tunisia after nine-year halt

Spanish private carrier Air Europa resumed flights to Tunisia early June, after a nine-year halt.

The first flight departed from Madrid on June 3, Sales Manager Moez Oudi Monday told TAP. The booking rate for the new airlink reached so far 80%, he added.

The company will run four flights a week (Monday, Tuesday, Friday and Saturday) till the end of September.

As of next October, two weekly flights will be scheduled (Monday and Friday). The air carrier will thus operate 280 flights and offer 33,600 seats, TAP notes.

According to the sales manager, the resumption of flights is part of the air carrier’s strategy to strengthen its positioning in North Africa.

Air Europa bets on the Tunisia destination, a favorite holiday spot for Spanish tourists, he added.

Spanish authorities lifted a travel ban on some of Tunisia’s southern regions early May, TAP recalled.

During the first five months of 2019, the number of Spanish tourists in Tunisia edged up 14.4% compared to the same period in 2018 (7,162 tourists).

Tunisian tourism had suffered a hard blow in 2015 following three deadly terror attacks that targeted foreign tourists.

Spain is the 6th foreign investor in Tunisia with 64 firms and its fourth customer and supplier.
