Spanish opposition parties oppose Spain-Portugal-Morocco trio to host FIFA 2030 World Cup
Two figures of the Spanish opposition expressed their opposition to Spain’s plans to co-host the FIFA 2030 World Cup with Portugal and Morocco as they question the advantage of a joint bid.
The objections came from the People’s party figure, Vicente Azpitarte and Roberto Nunez of Citizens-Party, who were both of them attending a meeting organized by the National Federation of Sports Facilities Entrepreneurs (FNEID) in Madrid, this week, Morocco World News reports.
Azpitarte was skeptical over the advantages that the EU country will get by jointly organizing the world cup with two other countries, states the website.
Nunez backed Aziptarte, arguing that Spain can alone stage the biggest global soccer competition.
“We do not intend to organize a World Cup with other countries. Spain has more than enough capacity [to organize the World Cup], it is a country that has already organized a World Cup, and we do not understand that proposal,” he said.
Spanish Premier Pedro Sanchez in his maiden international trip in November to Morocco right after his election, proposed to the kingdom’s authorities to work on a joint bid that include Portugal for the 2030 World Cup.
Morocco and Spain enjoy good relations in several areas ranging from security and migration to trade and education.
