Libya urges global cooperation to dismantle trafficking networks

Libya has called for stronger regional and international cooperation to combat human trafficking and migrant smuggling, stressing the need to dismantle transnational criminal networks and protect victims.

First Secretary Ahmed Al-Draidi of Libya’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations made the appeal during proceedings of the UN General Assembly’s Third Committee at its 81st session in New York, the Libyan News Agency reported this 7 October 2026.

He said efforts should focus on strengthening national capacities and adopting a human rights-based approach to protecting victims.

Libya also outlined initiatives to empower young people and women, strengthen social protection for older people and persons with disabilities, and protect children through cooperation with UNICEF. Preparations are underway for the second phase of its National Plan to Combat Child Labour.

The statement reaffirmed Libya’s support for transitional justice, national reconciliation, judicial independence and the rule of law. It also urged international action against online hate speech, incitement and religious intolerance.

Libya reiterated its support for Palestinian self-determination and an independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital, while calling for full financial and political backing for UNRWA to sustain its humanitarian work.
