The Polisario has been hit with a harsh reality check by U.S. Permanent Representative to UN Mike Waltz who told the Algeria-backed separatist group that the 50-year-old Sahara conflict cannot continue for another decade and that “the basis for a solution is on the table.”
In a tweet posted Wednesday on his X account after his meeting with a Polisario delegation, U.S. Ambassador said: “Refugees in the Tindouf camps have waited 50 years. They deserve real choices, not another decade of waiting.”
“The basis for a solution is on the table”, underlined the American diplomat, making reference to the UN Security Council Resolution 2797, which has endorsed Morocco’s Autonomy plan under the Kingdom’s sovereignty.
This resolution, adopted last October by the UN Security Council, calls upon the four parties to the Sahara conflict (Algeria, Morocco, Mauritania and Polisario) to engage in discussions without preconditions, taking as basis Morocco’s Autonomy Proposal, with a view to achieving a final and mutually acceptable solution.
Quadripartite meetings were held in Madrid and Washington under the U.S.-UN aegis to advance towards a final mutually-acceptable solution to the Sahara conflict in accordance with UN Security Council resolution 2797. But Algeria and Polisario armed militias have refused to comply with the UNSC resolution. They must be held accountable by the international community.
The meeting of Mike Waltz with the Polisario delegation comes nearly three months after he received the representatives of the Sahrawi Movement for Peace, set up in 2020 by former Polisario members who broke away from the Algeria-backed separatist group.
These Sahrawis are “voices committed to peace, compromise, and a durable solution,” to the Sahara issue, had said the American ambassador to UN.
“The world should hear” these Sahrawis, added the U.S. diplomat, sending a strong message to the Algerian regime and its Polisario militias.
The UN Security Council will hold end of October 2026 a meeting on the Sahara. Last year, the Algerian regime and its Polisario puppets have requested time to comply with UN Security Council decision. Twelve months later, it becomes clear that all they wanted is to gain time. But time’s up and status quo is no longer sustainable!
