Morocco has approved a first list of roughly 300 medicines for price cuts as part of a broader reform of the country’s drug pricing mechanism, according to a source at the Ministry of Health. The announced reductions range from 10% to 70%, though the specific medicines affected have not yet been made public.
Identifying which products are covered will depend on the publication of the official text setting the new pricing grid. The measure forms part of a wider overhaul: the interval between price revisions will be shortened from five to three years to allow more frequent updates, while a new rule will apply to medicines whose manufacturer price exceeds 300 dirhams — for these, Morocco will now adopt the lowest price observed among the reference countries it uses for comparison.
This change mainly affects the most expensive treatments, where international price gaps can be substantial. The Ministry of Health estimates the overall reform could generate savings of more than one billion dirhams.
According to figures presented by the minister, around 250 million dirhams should benefit patients directly through reduced out-of-pocket costs, with people on chronic treatments among those most likely to feel the effects. No specific medicine can yet be identified as part of this first wave of reductions.
Publication of the official text will mark the next step in the reform, and specify which medicines are covered and the price reduction applicable to each.
