Morocco’s coastal and artisanal fishing sector generated more than 6.28 billion dirhams in marketed products by the end of July 2026, up 2 percent compared with the same period last year, according to the National Fisheries Office (ONP). The volume of products landed reached 551,547 tons, an increase of 5 percent year-on-year, the ONP said in its latest report on coastal and artisanal fishing statistics.
By species, cephalopod values rose 7 percent, pelagic fish values edged up 1 percent, and crustacean values held steady. Shellfish, seaweed and white fish, by contrast, posted sharp declines in value of 85 percent, 65 percent and 8 percent respectively, reflecting uneven performance across categories despite the overall growth in volume and revenue.
In terms of weight, the ONP reported gains for pelagic fish, up 11 percent to 456,192 tons, and cephalopods, also up 11 percent to 41,243 tons, along with a 2 percent rise in crustaceans to 4,273 tons. Shellfish volumes fell 87 percent to just 69 tons, seaweed dropped 62 percent to 2,645 tons, and white fish declined 25 percent to 47,124 tons.
By port region, Mediterranean ports landed a total of 10,995 tons of coastal and artisanal fishing products by the end of July, up 8 percent compared with the same period a year earlier. In value terms, however, these ports saw a 10 percent decline, to just over 427.4 million dirhams, pointing to a mismatch between rising volumes and falling prices in the Mediterranean catch.
Atlantic ports told a different story, with landings rising 5 percent in weight to 540,552 tons. Value at Atlantic ports also increased, up 3 percent to nearly 5.85 billion dirhams, underscoring the Atlantic coast’s continued dominance in both the volume and value of Morocco’s coastal and artisanal fishing output through the first seven months of the year.
