Libya Central Bank’s Governor asks to leave post amid economic uncertainty

The Governor of the Central Bank of Libya, Naji Issa, has requested to be relieved of his position, according to two letters addressed to the Speakers of the House of Representatives and the High Council of State. Issa did not disclose the reasons for his request, citing the sensitivity of the circumstances surrounding the matter.

The Central Bank of Libya had not issued an official statement on the request. However, High Council of State President Mohamed Takala has urged Issa to continue performing his duties while the request is considered through the appropriate constitutional and legal procedures.

Takala said maintaining monetary and financial stability and ensuring the continuity of state institutions were particularly important given Libya’s current economic conditions. He urged Issa to continue regulating and monitoring commercial banks, with particular attention to controlling public expenditure and preventing violations involving government spending and foreign currency.

Issa assumed office as Central Bank governor in October 2024. Takala said he should remain in post until the relevant authorities formally consider his request and take the necessary action in accordance with the law.
