Moroccan foreign Affairs minister Nasser Bourita is representing King Mohammed VI at the African Union Extraordinary health Summit which opened Wednesday in Accra (Ghana) to discuss inter-African cooperation to end AIDS & TB and Improve maternal health by 2030.
The two-day summit opened with calls for stronger political commitment, sustainable health financing, resilient health systems, and African-led solutions to safeguard the continent’s health future.
In his address, Mr. Bourita highlighted the Royal Vision for building a sovereign African health system based on solidarity, social justice, and scientific know-how sharing.
He said that Morocco, under the leadership of King Mohammed VI, has made health a strategic pillar of its continental cooperation in line with the Summit’s three main priorities: to boost local pharmaceutical manufacturing, innovative funding, and political governance.
The Accra summit aims to pool African countries efforts to end AIDS by 2030, eliminate preventable maternal deaths, reduce the burden of communicable & non-communicable diseases, address neglected tropical diseases and conditions, and build resilient, sustainable health systems that provide equitable and quality healthcare for all.
Over the past two decades, sustained investments have contributed to a 74% reduction in AIDS-related deaths since 2004. However, these gains are increasingly at risk due to declining and uncertain external financing, underscoring the urgency of strengthening African-led and African-financed health systems.
The summit seeks to mobilise high-level political leadership, strengthen strategic partnerships, increase sustainable domestic financing, promote local pharmaceutical manufacturing, and accelerate the implementation of Africa’s health priorities in support of Agenda 2063.
